Objectives

  1. Identify 5 aspects that are unique to CBT
  2. Educate clients on CBT for anxiety
  3. Structure the initial and future sessions according to CBT principals
  4. Differentiate between healthy and necessary anxiety vs. maladaptive anxiety
  5. Educate clients on the neurobiology of anxiety disorders
  6. Disseminate information on the role of medication and CBT in treating anxiety disorders

Outline

  • Outline principles of CBT highlighting: problem solving and skills based model, relationship between therapist and client, active participation by client, present oriented model, note taking, cognitive training, behavioral activation including homework, therapeutic attitude and relapse prevention.
  • Demonstrate the differences of CBT for anxiety.
  • Explain how to structure first and following sessions, and how to educate client in CBT.

  • Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health diagnosis in children and youth. CBT works well with children - a collaboration with child - do not force.
  • Teenagers and youth adults who do not want their parents involved.
  • Imagery, games, drawing and telling a different story to re-work the anxious brain.

  6. Utilize breathing and progressive muscle techniques

Outline

  • Identifying themes of OCD. (violent, sexual, doubting, scrupulosity, illness, etc.)
  • Using the YBOCS.
  • Doing the opposite when treating OCD.
  • Using scripts (live example) and doing in vivo treatment.
  • Coaching through an exposure. (Live demonstration) Teaching family/friends to be coaches.
  • Successful exposures: proactive, consistent, frequent, intense
  • What doesn't work in OCD treatment.

Termination and Relapse Prevention AND Complex Cases

Program Information

Objectives

  1. Utilize the criteria for when a client is ready to terminate treatment
  2. Develop a discharge plan that includes provisions for relapse prevention and relapses
  3. Discuss with the client how they can use what they have learned in treatment to assist in other areas of their life
  4. Identify 3 reasons for client resistance to treatment
  5. Utilize practice guidelines to treat clients with co-morbid disorders
  6. Implement several strategies when the treatment does not seem to be working

Outline

  • Teach participants the signs that show a client is ready for termination.
  • Explain how anxiety is a chronic condition and that clients should expect and accept that relapses may occur in times of stress.
  • Teach participants how to develop a plan with client as to what should be done in the event of a relapse.
  • Emphasize to participants the importance of encouraging clients to continue to practice after treatment termination.
  • Wrap up: teach participants how to convey to clients how their overcoming their anxiety disorder has given them tools that can be used in every sphere of their life; i.e., tolerating uncertainty.
