Description

As a therapist, have you always wanted to learn more about Polyvagal Theory but didn’t know where to begin?  Or did you understand Polyvagal Theory, but didn’t know how to put it into practice?  This six hour workshop provides a great foundation for easily understanding Polyvagal Theory and also how to use it with your clients.  Topics that are covered include the autonomic impact of trauma, the three organizing principles of Polyvagal Theory, and the Ventral Vagal Upward Spiral.  During this workshop, guiding principles and exercises are also introduced so mental health clinicians can learn more about their own nervous system and help clients learn how to navigate theirs.

Objectives

  1. Integrate autonomic hierarchy processing techniques in therapy sessions to gain a better understanding of how the client is operating in their nervous system.
  2. Determine which polyvagal interventions would be effective in therapy sessions to effectively help clients increase self-regulation.
  3. Practice a multi-layered polyvagal approach in sessions to gain an understanding of your own nervous system and the importance of co-regulation which will help to deepen the therapeutic relationship and perspective.
  4. Implement techniques based on the concepts of neuroception and discernment so clients can increase their self-awareness regarding automatic behaviours and reactions they are having and create new pathways of behaviour.
  5. Choose appropriate interventions for clients to create flexible automatic nervous systems and increase their experience and familiarity with ventral energy.
  6. Formulate plans to improve client outcomes who have experienced trauma from the lens of the three organizing principles of Polyvagal Theory and increase clients’ understanding of the autonomic impact of trauma.
