Skills Session 1 - Effective Use of Direct Access

Attuned use of direct access is a powerful intervention that can offer parts of the client a healing experience in the therapeutic relationship that paves the way for deep, internal parts work. More extreme parts often need to feel the connection with the therapist’s Self in order to unblend and allow room for their Self inside. This opening session will be focused on when, and how, to use direct access effectively to move the therapy forward.

Skills Session 2 - Working with Non-verbal Parts

Various parts of the personality don’t communicate in auditory language, including very young parts. Working below the level of verbal communication is sometimes essential. In this session we will explore different strategies for working with non-verbal parts and offering them a healing experience beyond words.

Skills Session 3 - Being the Self in the Room

The presence of Self is the healing resource in IFS therapy. As therapists, however, we may have our own parts come up. Some parts of ourselves we may recognize and notice, but some can be beyond our conscious awareness. In this session we will discuss: how to identify the presence of our own parts in session, options for how to handle the situation, when and how to speak for a part with Self-leadership.

Skills Session 4 - The Relationally Corrective Experience (a.k.a. The “Do-Over”)

A transformational step in the IFS protocol is to support the client in offering an exiled part a healing experience with their Self in an injurious scene from the past. We will explore and discuss other parts that can come up during this step in the protocol, possibilities for providing exiled parts with what they most need, and Self-rectification of the past.

Skills Session 5 - Self-like Parts

When we don’t get our appropriate developmental needs met, parts take on roles to help fill the void. Some of the roles protective parts assume are designed to provide positive, socially acceptable, and culturally valued traits or behaviors. It’s easy for other parts of the client’s system, and for other people, to mistake these parts for the client’s Self. This session will focus on common Self-like parts, and how to sensitively broach this subject with clients.

Skills Session 6 - Post-Unburdening Integration Work

Unburdening is a turning point in the IFS protocol. However, integration of unburdening is a process that typically requires attention over time. This session will focus on the importance of: attending to parts post-unburdening, how to identify what is still needed in the system to consolidate the change, and how to support protectors in changing their extreme roles.

Meet world-renowned IFS Senior Lead Trainer Nancy Sowell, LICSW:
Nancy Sowell, LICSW, is an Internal Family Systems senior lead trainer and consultant in private practice on Cape Cod and in Newton, Massachusetts. She is a teaching associate at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Psychiatry at the Cambridge Health Alliance, where she has been a clinical supervisor for many years. Nancy has been a psychotherapist since 1992, working with individuals, couples, and groups. She has pursued training from many therapeutic schools of thought and in various therapeutic techniques, such as hypnosis, biofeedback, EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and meditation.
She integrates mindful awareness of the body, emotions, thoughts, and deeply held beliefs, as they influence our mood, behavior, health, and relationships. Specializing in behavioral medicine and IFS-based treatment for pain and illness, Nancy co-created an IFS treatment program for rheumatoid arthritis patients in a pioneering research study at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston. She knows both personally and professionally the power of Self compassion in healing and restoring health.
