Dissociation is one of the most common aspects of trauma... and one of the most complex.

Widely misunderstood and mistreated, it is vital that trauma treatment professionals understand how to approach and treat clients with Dissociative Disorders.

Because if you’re working with trauma - you’re working with clients who dissociate.

And in these cases, “therapy as usual” won’t be enough.

Truly expert clinical guidance on the finer nuances of treating dissociation is extremely hard to come by...

That's why we're excited to announce this unique opportunity to get personalised, next-level education and supervision directly from trauma expert and author Kathy Steele!

Register today and you’ll join an engaged cohort of your colleagues from around the world for monthly complex trauma and dissociation advanced skills and supervision sessions that teach you how to adapt your approach when working with clients who dissociate so you can guide them toward deep healing and long-lasting, transformational change.

Through this programme, you’ll learn:

  • How to tailor your approach when working with complex trauma and dissociation

  • How to recognise when a client is displaying behaviours such as psychological defences, re-enacting trauma, idealisation and complex transference and how to respond appropriately

  • How disorganised attachment originates, develops and manifests itself in clients and how to recognise and treat it

  • Practical techniques and approaches you can use to both treat clients and manage the therapeutic relationship with maximum effectiveness

  • The importance of boundary setting with clients and how to know which clients will benefit from flexibility and which will not

  • And much more - see skills sessions below!

Don’t miss your opportunity to be part of this very limited cohort of 56 participants.

Skills Session 1 - Working with Disorganised Attachment

Weds, 7 September 2022: 4.00PM to 5.15PM BST

Disorganised attachment is the bedrock of developmental trauma and a central focus of treatment. This opening session will explore how disorganised attachment develops and manifests itself in our clients. We will discuss practical approaches to treatment using the therapeutic relationship and boundaries as a healthy structure.

Supervision Group Session 1 - 5.30PM to 7.00PM BST

Skills Session 2 - Psychological Defenses as Relational Strategies

Weds, 19 October 2022: 4.00PM to 5.15PM BST

We are familiar with defenses in general, such as avoidance of emotions, aggression, or projection. But often defenses are employed to protect against vulnerability and authenticity in the therapeutic relationship. We will discuss several ways in which clients can engage with the therapist that block adaptive relationship and stall therapy, and the practical interventions we can use to reduce these defenses.

Supervision Group Session 2 - 5.30PM to 7.00PM BST

Skills Session 3 - Enactments

Weds, 2 November 2022: 4.00PM to 5.15PM GMT

Enactments of trauma are unconscious and inevitable replays of trauma in the therapeutic relationship with individuals with developmental trauma. In this session you will learn the signals for the presence of enactments and the specific approaches you need to help the client link the enactment to the past, so they no longer need to act it out in the present.

Supervision Group Session 3 - 5.30PM to 7.00PM GMT

Skills Session 4 - Decision-Making about Boundaries

Weds, 7 December 2022: 4.00PM to 5.15PM GMT

How do we decide whether to use email, texts or phone calls outside of therapy? When should we increase sessions in length or frequency? And when do these boundaries need to be limited? In this session you will learn which clients benefit from some flexibility and which do not. We will also explore countertransference issues of caretaking, rescue, guilt and urgency that may influence the decision-making process of the therapist regarding boundaries.

Supervision Group Session 4 - 5.30PM to 7.00PM GMT

Skills Session 5 - Idealised Fantasies

Weds, 18 January 2023: 4.00PM to 5.15PM GMT

Clients often have specific idealised fantasies about the past, themselves, perpetrators, and the therapist that can be maladaptive. These may significantly interfere with therapy. We will examine various common idealised fantasies and how they protect the client, as well as interventions to decrease the maladaptive positive affect associated with these fantasies.

Supervision Group Session 5 - 5.30PM to 7.00PM GMT

Skills Session 6 - Complex Transference

Weds, 8 February 2023: 4.00PM to 5.15PM GMT

In developmental trauma clients acquire many strategies that help them relate to others in the absence of secure attachment. These strategies are often maladaptive and lead to multiple and contradictory transference patterns with the therapist. Clients may be alternately passive, aggressive, competitive, seductive and seek attachment or avoid it. They may experience themselves as the victim in relation to the therapist, while expecting the therapist to rescue them. You will learn how to recognize these patterns and find compassionate ways to address them directly, promoting more adaptive and secure attachment strategies.
